How Does Auto Glass Repair Work?

It’s happened to almost everyone, you might be driving down a back road or cruising down the highway when an errant rock strikes your windshield. You can picture the repair bill now and for something that wasn’t even your fault. Depending on the extent of the chip it is possible to repair the damage without the expense of a windshield replacement. One thing you don’t want to do is ignore something that could turn into a much bigger problem that threatens the safety of your windshield.

What Type of Rock Chips Can be Repaired?

On closer inspection that chip may not be a chip at all but dirt from the offending rock. The first thing you want to do is wipe the area with a rag and if you’re lucky it may not need to be repaired. In the majority of cases the chip is the reality and can be repaired quickly and easily without the need for a new windshield.

Small chips that are less than 1 ¼ inch in diameter or smaller, by placing a quarter on the chip you have an idea of the diameter, anything larger may not be repairable.

Certain shapes, think bullseyes, flowers or stars which may indicate shapes that can be repaired and can usually be filled. If the center of the chip contains crushed glass it may be beyond help.

What Type of Damage Can’t be Repaired?

Aside from crushed glass long cracks can’t be fixed along with any old chip repairs the second time around. Cracks that look like spider legs radiating out from the chip itself can’t be repaired and location is a factor, for example if the chip is near the edge of your windshield you’re probably out of luck.

How Are Windshield Rock Chips Filled?

The auto glass repair technician uses a special resin that is injected into the center of the chip, pressure is applied  from a vacuum to help the resin to spread and fill the cracks extending from the chip.  Twenty minutes is all it takes and your windshield is as safe as it was previously.

What Will it Look Like?

Generally the repair will be unnoticeable however this is not always the case, it’s still a big improvement over visible cracks or chips and the important thing is the windshield is as strong and safe as it ever was.
